Villisca Axe Murder House Investigation

by Annette Munnich

On Saturday, January 10, 2009, B.R.U.T.A.L. Paranormal (Anthony and Jennifer Edwards, Herb Cook and Bob Cross) from Minooka, Illinois with Roland and Julz Saenz from Midway Paranormal Society Romeoville, Illinois conducted an overnight investigation at the Villisca Axe Murder House…

The Story

The Villisca Axe Murder House located in Villisca Iowa, is often included as one of the most haunted locations in the United States. It was voted as number one on the Travel Channel’s Most Terrifying Places In America. Villisca, Iowa is a small town in Montgomery County in the southwest corner of the state. This home is the site of eight unsolved murders from June 10th, 1912. Two adults,  Josiah and Sarah Moore, and their children, Herman, Katherine, Boyd, and Paul, were brutally murdered in their beds. There were two little girls visiting that night who were murdered as well, Lena and Ina Stillinger.

It is believed that the killer entered the house and hid while the family and their guests were out at a church function. Later that night after everyone went to bed the killer emerged and killed them all with an axe. It is a horrific crime that stuns the town and police had suspects that included Senator Frank F. Jones, Reverend George Kelly, Henry Moore and William “Blackie” Mansfield. The mystery remains, however, as to who murdered these people and why…

Read more about the crime, victims, and suspects…

The once flourishing town of Villisca is smaller today than it was at the time of the murders in 1912. The residents there were in favor of demolishing the Moore home and putting the tragic history behind them. Instead the house was purchased by Darwin Linn. The home has been restored and tours are available.

Paranormal legend and lore… This house is reported to be very active. Interaction with spirits of the children are common as well as doors that open and close on their own. Something more sinister and frightening is said to be in the house as well.

History-
On June 10th of 1912 in a small town in Villisca Iowa, was one of the most horrific murders of that era. 8 people were bludgeoned to death by an axe. There is 7 different suspects, no one was caught.
The Moore family was a very prominent family in Villisca. This was a family of 6. They were people of faith and went to church and church functions all of the time. Mr. Josiah Moore (Father) was a successful business man. Sarah Moore (mother) was active in the church and busy being a mother of 4. Herman Moore the oldest boy was 11, Katherine the only girl was 10, Boyd was 7 and Paul was 5.
On the night of the murder, the family went to a church program that the children were in. It ran a bit late and by the time it was over it was dark and almost 10 pm. Two friends of the children Ina and Lena Stillinger were supposed to walk to their grandmothers house, but it was dark and they were too scared to walk so they went to spend the night with the Moores. They all got home around 10pm and had milk and cookies and went to bed, never to awake again. According to the coroners they had all been killed around midnight, all killed by an axe. The murderer snuck into the house while they were at church. He waited for them to all fall asleep and when the midnight train went by, that is when he killed all of them. All 8 people Mr. Moore, Sarah Moore, their 4 kids and the two Stillinger sisters. He had went into the bedroom on the first floor off of the parlor and killed the Stillinger sisters frist, then he went up the stairs and killed Mr. and Mrs. Moore, then walked down the hall and killed their 4 children last. A total of 8 people all together. He then proceeded to eat breakfast leave the axe in the house with blood on it, and it happened to be Mr. Moore’s axe that he used to chop wood. The family and the Stillinger sisters were all buried in the Villisca cemetery. There was 7 possible suspects but no one was ever caught. The neighbor and Mr. Moore’s brother were the two who discovered what had happened first. It was a horrible crime that shook this small community.
Investigation report-
Upon arrival we were taken into the barn and watched a video of the event and history of the murder and family and home. We then went on a tour conducted by Mr. John Houser. He took us through the house and into each room and told us who was were and how they were found murdered. Then we were left to investigate the rest of the LONG ACTIVE night.
With in the first 5 minutes of the tour, a ball rolled out from under a bed and stopped directly in front of Bob. Bob is sensitive and so was another member of the group. They both felt many emotions as the night occurred. Sadness, Happiness, Depression, Fear, and possibly evil. We all had personal experiences. Anthony had someone touch his hand, Julz had someone touch her head, Herb got the chills in some spots as well as I did Roland also felt strange at a few points in the night.
We used the ghost box for most of the night, asking questions that were answered by many spirits in the house. The box said all of our names except for Herb. The box said Jenny…..Help me. I asked what I could do to help and got a response of blood, and sad.
The words that came out of the ghost box were
Blood
Torture
Get out
Out now
Out
Blackie, Henry, Frank, and Hank…These are names of suspects
Julz, Bob, Anthony, Roland, Jenny
Joseph, Sarah, Lena, Paul, Herman, Boyd
Not with me
These were all answers to some of our questions and then some words were just what the spirits said.
There was a point in the night around 11pm when the house got darker and colder and the box said “GET OUT NOW!” The 2 sensitives felt something strong that wanted control and wanted us out. Then all the children left. We took a break and the house then felt empty. That point we turned the box back on and were speaking to Sarah Moore and Joseph Moore, they validated who they were and answered a few questions. We have yet to go over all the hours of evidence, we did get a few videos of orbs flying by the cameras. Mind you the temp was 15 degrees out. Bugs are not what caused these orbs. We did get most of the talking of the ghost box recorded. It was a very active place, and an experience that I will NEVER forget. If there are people out there that do not believe in the afterlife, then maybe they should spend the night here! -Jen

Axe Murder house

Arrived at the house about 4:40pm
Watched video/slide show about the house and its residents, took tour of the house
started downstairs in the kitchen, then the parlor, the downstairs bedroom where I felt the presence of something but not very strong, continue the tour and went up stairs to the parents bedroom in which I felt a strong presence of something, as the guide continues to tell the story in the parents bedroom I went to the upstairs children’s bedroom and felt very heavy atmosphere when everyone else came in, the room became so heavy to me that I had to leave it so I went back to the parents room to wait on the rest of the group. The tour guide came in there and was telling me that he was feeling the same things as I was, then all of a sudden a ball comes rolling out from under the bed right to my feet, I immediately ask him if he kicked it and his response was NO, there was no one near him to see if he kicked it, if the ball was set close enough to the edge and hidden by the bed cover/blanket he could have very well kicked it and no one would have known, so to say that was paranormal there is doubt in my mind. I did feel the presence of a child standing to my right and I also had a feeling of happiness and good. I set the ball back under the bed
in a specific location and filmed it, later that night Roland and Julie were in the room sitting on the bed, the ball was at the edge of the bed on the floor covered by the blanket, when Roland sat down on the bed and moved his feet the ball came rolling out, I never told anyone I did this so I think it is very easy for the guide to set this up and make it look paranormal.

Now its time to start the investigation, when we all return to the house the first thing we found was a ball in the kitchen that was located in the northeast corner of the room on our tour, now it is in front of the hutch, no one was in the house after the tour, we tried to debunk this by placing the ball in different places on the floor then walking and jumping on the floor to get the ball to move and we could not duplicate it. So possible paranormal activity.
Roland and Julie were very intrigued with the Radio Shack hack box so we started upstairs in the parents bedroom, as we asked questions the names of Paul, Ina, Hank, came out several times, the name Boyd came out only 1 time, many, many, times upstairs I felt the children, Julie is also very sensitive and she also had the same feelings. I left them in the parents room to use the hack box and I went to the children’s bedroom. I could never get them to play ball or move anything but I just felt as if they were there with me.  Now its break time.
Breaks over and we start again, we continue to play with the radio hack box where we get more information out of it, this time they here the name Joseph, Paul, Ina and a child saying help me, we asked how many people were in the room and it replied 11, (that would be the 8 murdered and myself, Roland and Julie) we also asked who did this to you and they heard what sounded like Blackie, I myself could not make it out. As we get ready to wrap this session up we ask if they know who is here with them and the hack box replied Julie, my response was WHO IS JULIE ? at that time I did not know Julie’s name.
Roland intoduced her as Jewels to me so I didnt know her name was Julie. Break time.
Breaks over and we all decide to put the radio hack box in the parlor and all of us will stay there and ask questions and see how it answers, most of this i do not remember so Jen will have to fill this in. I am drawn to the children’s bedroom downstairs, I have terrible feelings in there and I ask Julie to come in there and tell me what she feels and she also has this terrible feeling, I was feeling sad, depressed, sicken, pain, grief, I wanted to cry. I asked what time did the murders take place and Jen said around midnight, Now if you take into consideration the time change 11pm in January would be midnight in June, I just know that was a very devastating point of time to me.  Then we decide to try the spirit writing and I say I will try so they take the hack box upstairs and everybody goes upstairs except myself. I try to do the writing but all I get is “GET OUT” over and over it becomes overwhelming so I stop and go upstairs with the rest of the group and I tell them what I’m getting, also at this time the hack box is telling them to get out. we all go downstairs to take a break and the hack box very sternly tells us to get out !!! I tell everybody do not leave, I go upstairs and proceed to tell the spirit we will not leave this is our house I am in control you will leave etc… Once I feel the spirit knows I am in control we go to break.
Breaks over and for the most part the house is empty to me, I feel nothing, Julie feels nothing, they play with the hack box upstairs and get a few more names and things from it but I got nothing, It did tell Roland his name when asked who am I, but
I was not there. For the rest of the night I am just exhausted mentally, I have had a headache, been sad, feeling exhausted, depressed, ever since the 11pm hour. Before we left I had everyone tal to the hack box and tell the spirits that they must go
back to the other that they can not follow us we waited for the OK which we did get. then we turned the hack box off and left.

Now I want to say this to the group, I do not know some of you, I want the entire group to understand that this investigation was very real, there was massive amounts of energy there. There was sadness, death, control, massive mood swings, a lot of pain and suffering. I did not feel any evil though. If you are weak minded and I DO NOT MEAN THIS IN A BAD WAY but most people are not as strong as myself please be careful with this stuff. I never beleived that a spirit could bring harm to a living human but after feeling the emotions and energy from this house I am having different thoughts about it. I feel that if you allow a spirit to control or take control you may get hurt and that is why I stopped everyone from leaving when it told us to get out. ALWAYS ALWAYS STAY IN CONTROL and pay very close attention to what is being told or felt. At the end of the investigation always tell the spirits to go back to the other side and not to follow you. Just do this for your own protection. I do know that spirits will follow you. I have had many do this to me. One day I hope to be able to meet all of you and do and investigation with all of you. MAYBE IN THE SUMMER ALL OF YOU CAN DO THE VILLISCA HOUSE and I promise I will be there again. One last word of advice PLEASE BE CAREFUL there is a lot to be learned and stay in control. -Bob

Herb Cook B.R.U.T.A.L. Paranormal Minooka, Illinois

Ok from the start of the tour I felt a heavy pressure in the house. Some places more than others. The house had a lot of energy in it. Base readings were at a 1.5-2.0 any thing over 2 would set off the lights of the EMF’s. It was really weird that, if you held the device straight up you got the base readings. If you held it sideways you pegged the meters. I have no reason to believe that they were not working. 4 devices all could not malfunction at once could they? I went for a walk outside. I walked to what I will call east first. I had to walk across the road and about 50 feet into the next yard. Before the E.M.F would not get a reading the same to the other directions. I was holding the meter straight up. We went into the basement to see if there may have been a power source. There was not any thing in there base reading = .03-1.3 straight up. sideways would make the meter go off. not pegged but really strong. In the house I did fell some sort of heavyness. Not a sick feeling or anything just heavy. I can’t explain it, you would have to be there. Now when John was taking us on tour. While I was in the upstairs bed room. Bob and John left the room. They were in the parents room. A ball came out from under the bed and stopped at Bob’s feet. Did it do it on it’s own?  I would like to think so. But every time I went back up there the ball was still in the same place under the bed. I would take a pic. every time and it was in the same place. Now when we were in the kids room down stairs. Me, Ro and julz were the only ones in the room. A ball rolled and hit Julz foot. Could have Ro kicked the ball. Maybe he said that he did not. I did not see him do it. But it was dark in there. So I can not say for sure. I have a few pics with orbs all different sizes. All over the place inside and out. I took a pic of the moon. and one showed up. As of the ghost box it seemed to answer questions as did the lights on the E.M.F.’s when Anthony asked questions. Do I believe in them? Maybe, I know that it seemed to work. It did answer some questions. Now for the very wierd part of the night. Ro’s camera went dead then all of a suden It would come back on. I do not think that a camera with a dead battery would  come back on. We asked that it turn it on and it did. I think that we should go back as a team. Really work the house half go in at a time. Since it is small. I have some pics with orbs in them. Yeah I know orbs right? I have searched to many sites on this place. I would have to say that every one of the sites has pics with orbs. So I am leaning toward these things being something. It was too cold for bugs outside. No snow or rain Just the biggest full moon of the year. -Herb

Roland “Ro” Saenz Midway Paranormal Romeoville, Illinois

This was the highlight of my night….
Much later on in the night we all decided to sit in the parlor, while using the ghost box, and decided to sit as a group and one by one ask “Do you want me to leave?” I was 5th to ask as everyone before me did not get a negative response. I decide to say “This is Roland,do you want me to leave?” We get a response “yeah”. Anthony then asks”Why do you want Roland to leave?” We get a response “yes”. He then asks “You don’t want Ro to leave the house do you?” Replies “yes”. Julz then asks who is this and whats your name?” Replies, “Mike”. Anthony again. “What did Ro do?” Response back “nothing.” I then ask “Why are you intimidated by me?” and the response came back as a faint “creepy.” I then ask why do you not like me? Few seconds goes by and then a very strong response of “Creepy”. I think in all it says the word “creepy” during this part of questioning 4 times. A spirit actually called me creepy! I thought that was one of the funniest things I have ever heard.
Now you ask if I personally believe in these ghost boxes? Well by the experiences I had there that night and hearing my name come through the box 3 times that night and hearing Julie’s name several times and getting a female response in regards to me asking can you say Ro and getting a response back right away as “Ro” then immediately I ask can you say “Julie” and within 3 seconds a female voice says “Juulll-ee” I was very impressed.

Now remember back in 1912 people dressed much differently and were very proper and men did not wear earrings,as I have a loop earring in each ear as well as I have my eyebrow pierced with a loop/hoop ring. I may have looked a little odd to someone from 1912.

As far as my photos, I cannot explain the images that I captured that night. One thing I do know is that we will return to that house again one day to once again confront what lies in the shadows of a house that sits forever in time known as the Moore home. -Roland

Being a demonologist, I have a lot of people express interest in what I do and enthusiasm for wanting to become a demonologist. I am more of the kind of person that just responds to that with a quick semi smile, thinking yea right – you have no idea the price you pay for such, and move on. I guess with the thinking that if I do not entertain them, they will just go on with life and forget about it. This is in reference to my everyday life, not my internet life. For the first time, I have had someone here on myspace ask me about being a demonologist, and here recently I have also had some team members ask me as well, and it is not so easy to just do the quick smile and change of subject with the team members. So, I have decided to address this subject for the myspace inquirer, as well as my team mates. My team mates have had the opportunity to witness the afflictions of the field, by seeing what I deal with following even smooth and simple extractions of demonic entities, but they as well have no real comprehension of my inner life behind closed doors. It is not something that I typically discuss with a layperson, and only discuss with those of like title, ministerial position or of understanding and strong support. Therefore, I will not go into any of that here, but I am going to lay out for you as best able what entails being a demonologist.

What is a demonologist and how do I become one?

Some will simply state that it is someone that study’s and catalogs demons, but a true demonologist is so much more then that, in fact it is a spiritual lifestyle. The study of demons involves studying every kind of recorded demon through history. The demonologist must go through endless texts and sometimes travel great distances to find literature (mostly religious material) of human intervention with demons. This is becoming more simplified with the internet era though. Cataloging demons involves data logging the different demons and knowing as much about then for the next time you either encounter one or come across it in your texts. Cataloging includes origin, gender, ethnic background, what religion it exists in, what geographical area in the world it mostly exists, sketches. Functionally a demonologist studies and catalogs demons, as well as they evaluate people or places that may possibly be plagued by demonic activity, and – when called by God and trained for such – run intervention against the demons. In validated cases of demonic activity, they perform the spiritual work to expel a demon from a location or person. You may also hear the term of “Religious Demonologist”. The title of Religious Demonologist is given by the Catholic Church to specific individuals who complete a dissertation on the topic. However, you do not have to be Catholic to be a demonologist, but you do have to be a person of solid religious faith in God, and following. Demonologist is a ministerial field, ordained ministerial field.

Understand from the start, that the power of an exorcism comes from God, so the study and cataloging area of a demonology plays little part in the exorcism area of the field, and therefore you may encounter a self appointed ‘demonologist’ that is neither appointed and anointed nor ordained to be such. Knowing the name of a demon has little benefit to the process of exorcism. Mortals have no intrinsic power or authority without Jesus Christ. We, as humans, do have authority over demons only through Christ, only when we invoke the name of Christ and the blood (as taught in scripture) but it is the power of Christ, not us, that commands the demonic forces. Even Archangel Michael did not command his equal in satan of his own, he commanded him with the words of “Jesus Christ commands you.” Michael merely has the authority to command in the name of Christ. I believe it is totally ludicrous for a person to become a self appointed demonologist when they do not have the calling and anointing of God, because to know them, to meddle in their business, is to be confronted by them and you better be equipped (anointed) to deal with them. There are specific gifts of God’s grace moving through a demonologist that protects them from being affected or injured. Power comes from God and channels through the demonologist that drives the dark forces back or causes them discomfort. Only people called by, and specifically anointed by, God to have direct interactions with the demonic forces are equipped with these gifts of protection and efficacy. Just having religious knowledge or faith, no matter how solid and strong, does not take the place of these gifts nor does it cause God to anoint someone with these special gifts ether. God gives different people different gifts of ability, and demonlogists are anointed with the specific gift of knowing when they are present (Discernment) and have the flow of Gods anointing to deal with them. Like a preacher has a calling and anointing by God to preach, being a demonologist is a spiritual calling and annointing. In saying this, it is still over simplified in the saying. You earn the anointing, you pay a high price for the annointing. a price that no sane person who actually understood the price would ever volunteer for. It is also a ministry field that requires you to live part of your life in a evil environment that often follows you home and attacks you personally, you and your loved ones. You live in a continuous realm of spiritual focus, you become a target so to speak. Most people go through life either never being touched by demonic spirits or merely being hit on once in a while, but a demonlogist is an active opponent of the dark forces and therefore pretty much lives in the boxing ring with them. So part of the annointing is also the spiritual strength and stamina to handle the dark forces as part of your existence and life, and to still remain stable as a human being and more importantly to remain stable in the anointing. There is nothing glorious or fun about it, it is not a normal existence and many times you just cry in the need of just wanting to be normal, to not have to be constantly on your toes spiritually and to not have to be the subject of every affliction they can place upon you or your loved ones. This is not something that any sane human being would choose to do, demonologists do it because they have to do it, because God appointed and anointed them to do, so therefore it is their moral responsibility to do it. No one chooses to be a demonologist, and any true demonologist would advise you that if you could choose, you would be insane and suicidal to do so and not go there. So in that aspect, there is no way for you to become a demonologist, God makes you a demonologist.

Demonologists seem to be normal and unaffected individuals to the layperson, leading to an air of simplicity about the field. This is true to an extent only because we are humans that have to function in physical world we live in, but the reader must understand that this comes from the anointing and the experience, the assurity of the anointment and the confidence in it, the adapting to it and it just becoming a way of life. I cannot stress this enough, as it is not simple by any means, it is a very hard existence. Know that most Demonologists live pretty secluded lives, and do not have many friends. The friends they do have however are usually very close friends and understand and support them. It is a simple fact that most people do not truly understand how this field of work and study affects the Demonologist, or what it takes to do it. Nor do they understand the calling and anointing. It is hard to understand something spiritual if you have not experienced such. Just as physicians deal with catastrophic injuries on a regular basis, yet seem to hold calm and emotionally unaffected when laypersons would experience horrific reactions and memories from such, they and we have simply adapted in order to do the job. I will say that I believe there is no worse trauma then spiritual trauma, it changes a person forever, changes your life, but we still have to adapt and remain efficient at the calling.

One way to unsettle a demonologist and earn their disrespect and maybe even their verbal wrath, at least this one, is to make light of demons being a real threat, to make light of the chance of encountering them if you meddle in spiritual things, such as paranormal research, and to make light of the harm that they can do to a person. When you live in this existence, you take great offense to someone making a mockery of what you have to contend with in everyday life and the sufferings (and losses) that go with this calling. Obviously, anyone who makes light of such things has been sheltered, spiritually stunted, is ignorant of the spiritual realm and has never had the experience of a demonic encounter…and they better hope they never do, because the demonic forces will eat their lunch. And unfortunitely, if that should happen, there may be no one to really care because they set themselves up for such. There is no greater lesson then a vicious demonic reality check. This is not to say that I would not care even if it is someone who has made a mockery of who I am and what I do. I would care and I would help them, that is my moral obligation and calling. Then again, most people who have this mentality are probably pretty safe in a blind immunity kind of way, because demons can operate better under cover and it is preferable to them that humans do not believe they exist or that they can influence and affect people, that way they get away with the things they want to do. On the other hand, lets just hope that this person never falls under affliction, because they will fail to comprehend the source and to be pulled out of it. Untreated affliction is death folks, devastating death.

Requirements of a demonologist: (This list was actually created by someone else and adapted by myself for further explanation, but since he hit the key points, I am using it just to save myself some typing)

There are a number of requirements for working in demonology. Without all of these you are putting yourself, your loved ones and your co-investigators in grave danger.

First and foremost, the religious demonologist must be called to the work by God, not by their own choice. If you want to be a demonologist, and have not been called by God to be one, that is a problem. No rational person wants to interact with pure evil and put their sanity, their physical life, and their soul at risk when they don’t have to. People in the work are called into the work and guided to people and situations that train them. Most, if not all, demonologists are in ministry, trained and ordained in ministry. Most are mentored for many years by another deliverance minister or demonologist. Such as I have a spiritual father, Frank, who was my mentor for many years. God is in charge from the beginning to the end. If you want to be a demonologist only because you think it would be cool, because you want to be thrilled, or you think you are going to defeat evil, you will either be corrupted by evil, driven insane, or dead soon enough.

Everyone functioning along with a demonologist must also be called to do so. There can be no bystanders or curious onlookers; they are open to being attacked and their presence is a major weakness that will be used against those present. I work with what I call a deliverance team, which is comprised of persons that I know are spiritually strong. They are firm believers in Christ, they are not easily intimidated or frightened and I know that no matter what happens, they will stand strong and calm and continue to participate in the position I have assigned them.

Secondly, all demonolgists need to have the gift of discernment. It would seem strange that God would put this calling on someone if they did not have this specific gift of God, as you have to be able to discern a demon in order to battle a demon. Discernment is the word used to describe a spiritual gift from God that allows a person to detect the presence of demons. Discernment, as well as all gifts from God, is active on an “as needed” basis only. The gift of Discernment is not the same as the gift of knowledge or the laymans term of being psychic. Psychic sensitivity is connected with feeling the presence of human spirit, or of detecting a person’s feelings or intent. Generally the people that have psychic sensitivity do not have discernment. This is seen most often in the trend of psychics claiming demons don’t exist because they don’t feel their presence. People with psychic sensitivity are generally used to it “working” all the time and being able to know what is “going on” in an area. This sometimes leads to a kind of arrogance that if they don’t detect it then it’s not there and no threat to them. This creates a situation where they are very vulnerable to being manipulated by demons. The demons seem to be able to tell what gifts people have. They exist and communicate in the spirit all the time; they can easily communicate any illusion or miss-information to a psychic sensitive without being detected for what they really are. The classic example of this is feeding a false name to a psychic, convincing them that they “got” the demons name. This is to encourage people to confront or try to expel the demon with this false name, thereby overstepping their bounds. Demons never, ever, give their real name unless under spiritual duress.

You must have special supernatural protection and intervention from God in order to survive, remain sane, and be effective in religious demonology. It is not the human person or the priest who drives a demon from a person’s home or body. It is not the human will that makes a demon stop throwing objects around the room or causing horrible thoughts and pains in the people there. There is no personal power or authority in humans: all intervention, protection, and authority come from God on a moment-by-moment basis.

You might be free from sin and close to God one moment and be covered in sin and vulnerable the next. If you meddle with demonic forces without the special protection that comes from a calling from God, and without living in a way pleasing to God, you will know it from the outcomes of your interactions with the demonic. If you see yourself depressed, isolated, suicidal, homicidal, obsessed with demons, thinking you are powerful or in control of demons, or working for evil, there is a problem.

You must be under legitimate church guidance and authority, at least solidly during your apprenticeship. Along with a legitimate calling from God naturally come the contacts, friends, and guidance from people with decades of experience in the work. It should come as no surprise that you cannot learn how to function as a religious demonologist from any book or web site. Doing so and thinking you have any real knowledge or understanding is folly.

You must understand what it means to give your life to God and surrender your physical life to the will of God. Without giving up your life to God’s will, not your will, you will feel fear and intimidation in situations where you might die. This cannot happen as death is a real possibility in this work and that reality cannot be used against you to intimidate you or control you. If you are afraid to die in God’s service, the demons will know — and you will be crushed by your fear.

You should be of a mature age. It is unhealthy and very dangerous for a developing mind and soul to interact with the demonic realm. Once you cross the line into knowing the reality of demons, you will go through a psychological and spiritual crisis where you must come to terms with your new reality. This can be very challenging for any adult; the young forming mind is generally not equipped to handle this successfully. Better to live a normal happy life when young (this pertains to someone is has the calling) and leave this topic for later in life.

The work must be done as an act of charity. You cannot mix any selfish motives into the work: fame, bragging rights, monetary compensation, social power, or other benefits. This must be work for good and for God, not for you in any sense. You are nothing but a vessel that God channels through to help others in the throes of demonic affliction. To do this for selfish reasons puts you in an arena with a supernatural force way beyond your comprehension with little or no protection.

When you are a Demonologist you never really quit learning. This field of work requires constant learning, and studying, and there are no experts. The Catholic tradition for Demonology is the most popular because the Catholic Church pretty much established the field. The Catholic Church for example usually requires the person to be either clergy, or to be ordained once they have finished their initial studies into the subject. Some of the Catholic churches require the person studying to become a Religious Demonologist to write an essay type paper (dissertation) to make sure that they understand the field, etc. before being ordained. Other denominations are not as rigid as the Catholic Church, but will agree that you are required to have ministerial training and mentoring for a lengthy amount of time, and be an experienced demonologist before venturing out as your own entity. Ordination comes from God more then it does from man, because this is a calling and anointing by God, not man; if God annoints you and calls you to something, you better heed such regardless of man. However it is important to also have the blessing of a ministerial alliance in being ordained as you need that training, mentoring and continued support.

Now as a afterword, I do not want anyone going from here thinking that every day of our lives we are out here in hand to hand combat rescuing demonically plagued people like super power beings or something. I will be the first to tell you that demonic attacks are rare. Encountering a demonic entity that wants to take you on is rare. One thing that I strongly advise people is to not look for demons around every corner, in fact it is best that one just disregard them for the most part. Greater safety comes in the not acknowledging them or summoning them by giving them undue credit. If you want an encounter with a demon, you will probably get one eventually, so best policy is to just ignore them. Even though demons exist right along side us in this physical realm, for the most part they are not haunting places. That is a rarity in fact. Demons objectives are not to inhabit locations and become the focus of paranormal investigations. There are principalities that inhabit locations to influence masses of people, but other then that demons objectives are to inhabit human individuals in order to physically function in the physical realm. They do not just lie in wait in corners of haunted locations to try to take someone captive, and in fact the affliction of a human and the goal of inhabiting the human is somewhat of a process that extends over time. Yes, there is the possibility of an encounter when you put yourself in a position of meddling in the spiritual realm, there is a reality of stepping into an instantaneous encounter, but that is rare. Most paranormal investigations in haunted locations are only going to involve the dealing with human spirits. There are negative human spirits, do not confuse them with demonic spirits. Humans in death will most likely be the same as they were in life. If you had a negative, nasty personalitied and angry human in life, he most likely be such in death as well. There is a difference, and this is where the gift of discernment does come in handy in paranormal investigations. I encounter many negative human spirits, and they just are what they are. However if a demonic spirit gets within my radar, it becomes a whole different ballgame and experience. It is that awakening of the discernment and there is no mistaking what is in my presence. I can honestly say that in my thirty years of just paranormal investigating, there have only been two true demonic encounters. I have had hundreds of them in my actual ministry, but in just investigating reportedly haunted locations, they have been that rare. The first encounter I just walked away from, because it was an abandoned uninhabitable dwelling that was out in the middle of nowhere when I was just wandering one evening, they exist in this realm and unless they are harming a human there is little one can do about their existence. The other was a client, and the sad thing is, most paranormal investigators (non demonologist) would have just done a routine investigation and walked away. It was the discernment that immediately awakened and keyed me into the problem, that leading to some in depth questioning of the client of things not voluntarily revealed in the interview. It was an affliction that had literally destroyed their family, that had already taken the life of one family member tragically so, and that any paranormal investigation was not going to cure. Demons try to hide themselves, avoid discovery, this so they can remain in control and finish the job. Therefore, It is very unlikely that even if present, they are going to jump out at you and announce themselves. Your bigger risk is just in the fact that when you meddle in the spiritual realm, you open yourself up to them choosing you for their next victim. Paranormal investigation is somewhat of a open invitation for demonic entities, so I will always state as a demonologist that if you are going to be a paranormal investigator, learn how to protect yourself from such happening. Although rare, you have the door open to them and you just have to be aware of that fact and know how to block them from entering through it.

If anyone has any further questions about being a demonologist, I will try to answer them for you. Granted, it is not my favorite topic because I would prefer that people would just recognize that there is nothing exciting or pleasant about this field, and it is not an anointing and calling that anyone would ask to be given. I will trade places any day with the person gifted with a great voice and singing in the choir, if only it were that easy. It is not something that you want to be, believe me.

Bobby Mackey

Country Music star Bobby Mackey

Bobby Mackey’s World

by Annette Munnich

If you like your ghost stories to be factual as well as chilling to the bone, then I have the story for you. It’s intricate and multi-faceted like a black diamond, glistening and alive in it’s perpetual darkness. This is the true account of country and bluegrass music star Bobby Mackey and some of the history and experiences pertaining to his nightclub, Bobby Mackey’s Music World. Love and death linger intermingled in this structure with a well that is called the gateway to hell, and a stairway to heaven that leads to nowhere. The place in between is Bobby Mackey’s…

Bobby Mackey’s Music World is still open for business and going strong after 30 years. It’s located in Wilder, Kentucky which is actually on the outskirts of Cincinnati, Ohio. Just inside the door a sign warns visitors that the establishment is haunted and the bar is not responsible for any damages. In other words, enter at your own risk. There are more than 20 signed affidavits from police officers, employees and church leaders in regards to paranormal experiences at Bobby Mackey’s Music World. It is true that Bobby’s wife, Janet, does not go to the club any more and hasn’t stepped foot on the premises in years. Janet, who did not believe in ghosts, was physically pushed which resulted in a fall down a flight of outside stairs and told by a disembodied voice to “get out”. And she did. *** Update. Sadly Bobby Mackey’s wife Janet passed way February 15th, 2009.

This is how an ordinary place evolved into one of the most haunted sites in America.  There are two structures here. The bar itself was once a speak-easy with mob connections. The back building, at one time, was a slaughter house and the blood from butchered animals ran down the well and emptied into the Licking River.

Bobby Mackey's Wilder Kentucky

Bobby Mackey's Wilder Kentucky

A recipe for a nightmare

Building section one which is now the nightclub

Building one is the site where love meets murder and suicide. The lovely dancer Johanna falls in love with singer Robert Randall. Her disapproving father has Robert killed. Johanna fatally poisons her father. She then goes to a secret room above the stage, writes a poem on the wall and commits suicide taking her life as well as the life of her unborn child… The activity in this location includes the sound of a crying woman believed to be Johanna locked in eternal sorrow. Bobby wrote a song called Johanna that tells her tragic tale.

The nightclub building has very strong paranormal activity. That includes heavy objects being moved and even thrown, people being pushed, and full body apparitions. The jukebox plays the Anniversary Waltz even though the record does not exist on the playlist. It has the ability to play this song whether it’s plugged in or not.

Carl Lawason was a maintenance worker who lived in the apartment upstairs. Carl is also the person who discovered the well underneath the floor in building two, which he regrets to this very day. Carl reports hearing what sounded like an army walking across the downstairs (bar area) floor every morning at 6 am. He also saw apparitions in his apartment as well as feeling cold spots and other various paranormal experiences during the time he lived on premises. Carl’s luck ran out when he actually became possessed and a six hour exorcism was performed to save him. When Carl came back into consciousness from this he was trying to choke the pastor. An unexplained fire spread up the wall immediately afterwards. Carl can still feel the negative forces present at Bobby Mackey’s.

Building section two which was the slaughterhouse.

Love becomes murder, decapitation, execution and dark eternal promises… Rewind for a moment to the well that Carl Lawason found under the floor. What he also found there was a piece of a human skull. This is the story of a girl named Pearl Bryan who was murdered by her boyfriend Scott Jackson and his companion Alonzo Walling. Her body found in the river without a head. The police dogs follow a scent that leads to the well in the slaughterhouse. Her killers were caught, tried and sentenced to death. Jackson and Walling were the last two people ever to be hung in Campbell County. Before the execution Pearl’s murderous boyfriend vows to haunt the place forever. This is a promise he and his friend Alonzo seem to have kept.

Alonzo’s spirit has been seen in the nightclub building as well and is accompanied by a feeling of heat instead of cold. He is able to manifest and has strength enough to throw garbage cans.

There is only one way to make this entire scenario worse and that is reports of devil worshipers performing satanic rites at the site of the well, opening a portal between this world and hell. The walls are stained with dripping blood, where strange and sometimes grotesque faces can be seen. A few feet from the well, a simple wooden staircase ascends to nowhere, leading only to the ceiling. Is it a pointless mockery that none can escape the doom that is this place?

At 60 years old he continues to write songs. Bobby takes the stage at his club and rocks the house with his brand of Country/Western and Bluegrass fare.

Shallow Graves Interview

by Annette Munnich December 2008

Recently I had the chance to ask Sean and Yvette Kelley some questions about their new and exciting magazine called Shallow Graves. Their premiere issue made quite a splash in the paranormal community. Editors Sean and Yvette put out a veritable smorgasbord of all things mysterious plus interviews, reviews and event coverage. I predict this mag will be very hot in 2009 and beyond.

The Interview

Annette: Can you please tell us about your new magazine, Shallow Graves?

Sean: Shallow Graves is for people interested in the world of the Supernatural & Unnatural, Unnatural being anything that isn’t normal or mundane.  We cover anything and everything that is in that realm.  From celebrities, musicians, artists, writers, events, anything we can find or comes and finds us.  It’s a cross between FATE Magazine and Fangoria.  We also include original short stories from today’s authors within our pages.

Annette:
How did each of you get interested in the Paranormal?

Yvette:
I have been interested in the paranormal since I was a child. My older sister passed away from cancer at age 9 and we swore we could hear her about in the house. My older brother Tom D’Agostino had always been into the paranormal and is very well known here in New England and I think a lot of my interest has also stemmed from him and places he would check out while we were growing up.
Sean: I have a very vivid imagination and I watched too many movies when I was little so things that go bump in the night still scare and fascinate me.

Annette:
How did the magazine get started?

Sean:
We went to Chicago to go to a CW’s Supernatural convention and we drove out.  On the way back home we talked about the event.  We already own a production company called King’s Feast Productions here in Rhode Island, where we’ve had a successful continuing run for the last 5 years, of a medieval dinner theater show called “The King’s Feast”.  We talked about how the convention was run and what went into it and some of the connections that Yvette made there.  It was something that extremely interested us.  A friend of ours came to Yvette about working for a magazine he was working with at the time and she had made some great headway with some big league actors, so she had the connections for interviews.  Well, things didn’t work out and Yvette still had these contacts and one night she looked at me and said “Screw this.  Let’s do it ourselves!”  We both love the Entertainment industry and the Paranormal so it seemed like a great fit for something new into the genre.
Yvette: Pretty much what Sean said.  I was landing interviews with stars from the TV series Supernatural and everything seemed to be falling into place. We just went with it and knew people who wrote and started making contacts and here we are today.

Annette: What has been your most bizarre or surprising experience so far?

Yvette:
Interviewing almost every cast member of the TV show Supernatural. I went to cover several Supernatural conventions and not only ended up covering them but literally working them as far as England. It has been an amazing experience thus far. I have now become friends with several of the actors from the show. People have to realize that they are no different than you or me they just have high profile jobs.
Sean: I don’t know if it’s bizarre, but to me it was extremely surprising.  I did an article with 8 Horror Hosts from around the US about the business and one of the questions I asked was “Are you a religious person?”  Just because I was curious since these people deal with a lot of “Supernatural/Horror” kind of movies and things and one of host explained to me that he had gone from being Wiccan to being Catholic.  I had never met anyone who’s done that before.  I’ve met a lot of people who went from Catholic to Wiccan, but not the other way around.  It always cracks me up thinking of it.  It was something I had never heard of anyone doing before.

Annette: Have either of you had any personal experiences with the paranormal?

Yvette: Just the one I explained earlier of hearing my sister after she passed. We had cubbyholes in our house where her stuff was stored and we could hear a lot movement in there at night. It freaked us out so much we had our mom put a lock on the door. It took my mom a long time but she was able to finally to finally let go and get rid of my sister’s stuff and after awhile the noises stopped.
Sean: The only experience I’ve had at this time is there is a mansion in Newport, RI called “Belcourt Castle”. The castle is known to be haunted with different things.  There is a room upstairs that has a mirror that is on a wall.  A bunch of us were in this room because we heard of the mirror.  If you go into the room, unless you’re extremely tall, you won’t be able to see yourself in this mirror because it’s high off the ground, but if you raise your arm you can see your hand in it.  Well, we’re standing about 10 feet away, because the area is roped off for tourists and we’re all raising our hands and you can see them in the mirror.  Then you see your hands in the mirror tilt from side to side, kind of like a fake “royal wave” that everyone goofs about, but your hand is not moving because you’re keeping it still.  The mirror isn’t moving; it’s against the wall and can’t move.  Your reflection is moving.  It happens all the time!  We were there during the day time and I’ve also been there during the night time and had it happen.

Annette:
What’s coming up in your next issue?

Sean: Right now we’re working on a few different things.  We’re looking at what we’re calling a “New Age of Horror Genre” with interviews with the stars of the new Friday the 13th   (Jared Padalecki) and My Bloody Valentine (Jensen Ackles, Todd Farmer) along with other cast members.  We talk with Edward Douglas of the band Midnight Syndicate who is releasing an independent movie called “The Dead Matter” that he did with Special FX guru Robert Kurtzman.   We’re working on an article with tattoo artist madman Brandon Bond of All or Nothing Tattoos who also does animal rescue and has a documentary of it coming out in the next month.  We also have interviews with Rex from The Avalon Apothecary about herbalism in today’s society. Plus, we hope to have more interviews with Supernatural stars both past and present. We’ve had a few submissions for some short stories that we’re looking at right now and interviewing an up and coming artists from France named Christine De Carvalho.  These are just a few things that we’re working on.  We’ve got some irons in the fire so we can’t really confirm a few other things yet, but we can assure you that they’ll be cool!

Annette: Thank you both and good luck with your magazine. I know it will be around for a long time!

Ghost Boxes…Fact or Fiction?

Personal Experience

I spent the majority of 2008 in the ghost box research community.  About a year ago I was present when Jeff Rezman did a demonstration at an ISPI meeting in Mommence, Illinois. This led to a fascination on my part as to what, exactly, the box was capable of. I met many ghost box and RTSC (real time spirit communication) researchers and was a member of the RTSC yahoo group owned by Steve Hultay. I became friends with many people in this field, and did an interview of Steve Hultay last May which can still be read on this website. During the course of my involvement I have listened to hundreds of audio files, and have participated in approximately a dozen sessions mostly over Skype. I was an observer and never at any time have I owned or operated a Frank’s Box, Joe’s Box, Radio Shack Hack, or any other variation on what is sometimes known as the “telephone to the dead.” I was a member of Frank Sumption’s Yahoo group as an observer and never actually talked to him. I do know Joe Cioppi (Joe’s Box) and Bill Chappell (Paranormal Puck and Ovilus) through e-mail correspondence.

Do these devices work?

I know it sounds crazy, and I know the ghost box is radio based and all sorts of sounds can come through, so it’s only logical to say that people are making words and sentences out of bits and pieces of radio transmission. I thought that too. In truth, from the bottom of my heart, with all great sincerity, ghost boxes do work. It’s like the white noise principle. The radio is set to constantly scan and verifiable communication has come through as well as swearing which is not allowed on radio broadcasts. (There are people doing RTSC research without ghost boxes using running water, fans, and other background noise to capture messages from the other side.)

The spirits become familiar with the researchers and will often make reference to Frank Sumption and others on differnent boxes all over the US and beyond (although this community is primarily in the US). Each researcher has what they call “technicians” which are spirits that normally come though for that researcher and give information as well as try to connect the researcher with others they are wishing to speak to. The technicians also give warnings when dark entities are coming which are sometimes referred to as “darkheads.” If a person gives a box they once owned to someone else the new owner may be faced with a barrage of questions as to where the previous owner has gone. A well known researcher in Mexico gets communication in English although the radio stations there are all Spanish.

I’d also like to mention here that Bill Chappell’s inventions, the Paranormal Puck and the Ovilus, are not radio based.

It’s not that simple however

Yes the boxes work. Do they always work? No. Can people easily make contact with anyone they wish to speak with? No. Do the spirits predict the future for you? Sometimes they will speak of current situations and immediate future but for the most part no. Will they tell you the secrets of the universe and the mysteries of life after death? The spirits are stingy with this kind of information and sometimes other spirits will interfere and cut off communication with a spirit who is telling too much. Do the boxes always speak the truth? No. Can you control who comes through your box? No. Do people listen too hard and matrix messages out of gibberish? Yes sometimes. Do spirits lie about who they are? Sometimes yes…

The best uses for ghost boxes

Ghost boxes and all related RTSC spirit communication devices are outstanding tools at haunted locations. Often the messages come through very clearly. Most researchers and operators begin each session with a prayer of protection (even the ones that say they don’t believe in God… I haven’t really figured that one out yet:) Some use ghost box technology to help deliver earthbound spirits to the other side. They work well at cemeteries too.

You must tell the spirits you are ending the session when you are done so they can go back over to the other side and wait for the technicians to tell you everyone is back. If you don’t you may bring them home with you. This happens even to the more experienced researchers. Common. In essence the box does not just allow you to speak to the dead it attracts them into your physical environment. It is common as well for ghost box people to have infestations of unwanted ghosts and shadow people in their homes. Even those that claim to be careful. Many researchers do not use the box in their home due to bad experience. I have heard stories that would make your skin crawl.

My conclusions

After months of backseat involvement my personal opinion is that the box works. It is also my opinion that it is not reliable. Three attempts were made to contact any one of my deceased relatives and all failed. Many spirits were present talking but no one I knew for sure.

Safety Issues

From my observation the boxes are very unsafe even in the hands of those who are very experienced. I believe they open a portal of sorts and are like an electronic ouija board as Rosemary Ellen Guilley has stated. There is no way to control who will enter your environment. The box opens a door to anyone and anything. The dangers are not limtied to unwanted spirit guests who don’t want to leave, or those who accompany you home from another location.

Secondary dangers include believing all messages coming trough the box to be true. Egomania occurs in many cases as the researcher feels special and privileged communicating with the dead. Full blown obsession with the ghost boxes is not uncommon. Spending more time with the dead than the living is not healthy for anyone.

Children of the Grave
Sci-Fi Channel Special
A Booth Brothers Film/Documentary 2007
Featuring; Keith Age, Rosemary Ellen Guiley, John Zaffis, Steven La Chance,

Troy Taylor, Greg Myers and The Paranormal Task Force.
by Annette Munnich

Children of the Grave is a documentary about hauntings by children. This film focuses on locations in the midwestern United States. The Paranormal Task force, along with assorted prominent paranormal personalities, take the viewer on an intriguing journey exploring the unknown.

The film begins with Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana, where nearly 700 children from four local orphanages were buried in a mass unmarked grave. The investigation continues in Indiana at the Orphan’s Asylum and the School of the Blind.
Bartonville State Asylum and Cemetery in Peoria, Illinois is featured as well as the very creepy Pythian Castle in Springfield, Missouri. The latter part of the investigation moves to Zombie Road in St. Louis, where a photograph of children’s shadows is captured among the trees.

This Booth Brothers creation is a chilling must-see for people with an interest in ghosts, hauntings, the paranormal and all that lies beyond. It’s well made, entertaining, interesting and I give it a thumbs up.

Interview with Bill Bean

by Annette Munnich

I recently had the opportunity to read Bill Bean’s book DARK FORCE and ask him a few questions. Bill’s story is one of extreme terror that spans more than ten years that the Bean family lived in a house in Glenn Burnie, Maryland. I consider Bill to be a very courageous individual for all he has gone through and for openly speaking of it knowing that some will not believe. He was very brave as a boy as well fighting against the dark forces that inhabited the family home.

I have found Bill Bean to be a very kind and spiritual man. His strong faith assisting him in keeping the malevolent presence at bay that plagues him to this very day. Bill’s family was the subject of an episode of the television show A HAUNTING called appropriately “House of the Dead.” Of course there is much more to the story than what was on the one hour show. It was heartbreaking to read the details of their suffering that took many forms. Bishop James Long talks about demonic oppression and this seems to be the case in this story. The dark forces plaguing them with attacks, illness, and hardship at every opportunity.

May the angels always watch over Bill and his family~

The Interview

Annette: Bill, how difficult was it for you to revisit all these painful memories in order to write your story DARK FORCE?

Bill: It greatly affected me emotionally, having to put myself back in that situation. I have given over 100 interviews and It’s still very difficult to discuss.

Annette: How long did your family live in the afflicted house?

Bill: We lived there for over ten years. Looking back on it, I truly don’t know how we did it. The most violent and intense activity happened between 1973 to 1980 when we left. My father left us in 1975 and it seemed like we were prisoners there, bound to the evil entities that co-existed among us.

Annette: Bill could you share with us some of the traumatic things that happened to you and your family during this period?

Bill: Many traumatic things happened, far too many to list. The first physical attack by the evil force was on my sister in late 1970. I was the next one to be attacked in 1971. Our attacks were very similar. We were both awakened in the middle of the night by an unseen presence. She was grabbed around her leg and she was able to let out a scream for my parents. They rushed into her room and stopped what was about to happen to her. She had red marks on her leg where she said she was grabbed.

As for me, I tried to get out of bed to wake my parents and a force grabbed me by my shoulders and slammed me back on the bed. I was pinned on my back and was unable to move anything except for my eyes.  I was five years old at the time and I was so traumatized that I felt like I was going to leave my body. There’s much more to tell about this experience, but I don’t want to get long winded. It’s all in my book, “Dark Force”.   I was attacked many times like that over the years. The most traumatic experiences involved the attacks on my mother. She truly suffered more than anybody I have ever known.  My father was a very good man, but his demeanor had drastically changed by 1973. He turned into a raging alcoholic who physically abused my mother from 1973-1975, nearly killing her on several occasions. I have no doubt that the demonic entities were able to enter my father while he was in a drunken stupor. He left us in 1975 and my mother would suffer regular physical attacks from the entities. I was also quite traumatized as I witnessed four evil apparitions manifest just a few feet in front of me. Five adults were standing behind me as this was happening.

Annette: How are your family members now and do they talk about these dark and horrible experiences from the past?

Bill: I have my sister, brother left and we don’t discuss what happened to us. We had never discussed it at all until Discovery Channel [New Dominion Pictures], approached me in 2005. They somehow found out about my story and asked if I would consider doing a segment for, “A Haunting”.  When I first mentioned this to my siblings they were reluctant to be a part of it. Then one Saturday evening we sat down and talked about it for the first time. They reminded me of some things that I’d forgotten about and they decided to be a part of the interview for the show. We haven’t discussed it since the show aired. They have been with me on several of my book signings and appearances, but they have not publicly talked about it.  We have all suffered permanent damage and scars from this. There’s a lot of bitterness, feeling that our childhood was robbed from us. Neither of my parents lived to be 50.

Annette: What do you feel the presence was in the home and what do you think it wanted from you?

Bill: I have no doubt that it was demonic and it wanted to destroy us.  My family was destroyed and both my parents suffered sudden, untimely deaths.

Annette: How did this trauma affect your childhood and how has it changed your life?

Bill: What childhood? I’m sorry to state it that way, but my memories of childhood are filled with fear, torment, abuse, strife, violence, illness, suffering, loss and tragedy.  I was an empty young man for many years until GOD delivered me from it.  I’ve had many experiences since we left that house, including the 1988 possession of a loved one. I have no doubt this occurred because the demons were trying to get to me.

Annette: Bill could you list some warning signs that people in paranormal situations should know in order to determine that they need help from an outside source as soon as possible?

Bill: Evil works behind the scenes. The devil doesn’t come to you and tell you that he’s going to create havoc in your life. Usually evil will need a door to be opened to come into a person or a family’s life. When that door or invitation happens, little things will begin to happen. Things that will first confuse and perplex the affected person. The entity will feed on these emotions and will gain power when the affected person becomes fearful. We must be very careful when being affected by evil. I believe that we can take authority over it in the name and in the blood of Jesus Christ ! I would say that anyone who’s experiencing paranormal events and is having a noticeable change in demeanor [in a negative way], or the family is in chaos since the activity began, should seek help right away.  GOD Blessed me at the age of 13, when I was able to stand up the the entities and do battle with them. I had no power of my own, it was GOD’s power. I currently help families in need of deliverance from evil.

Annette: Any words of wisdom about what people in this type of situation should not do? Are there ways to make it worse?

Bill: The things people shouldn’t do: Don’t try and contact the entities. Satan is the original liar, that can even appear as an angel of light.  We must be very careful. Contact and communion with evil will cause severe problems and even death in some cases such as my family. Please refrain from Ouija Boards and things of that nature.

Annette:
What are your personal beliefs concerning life and death at this point in your life?

Bill: GOD is Life!  Jesus Christ is my Savior!  satan is death! fallen angels & demons are liars! I truly have experienced the Awesome power of GOD and the vulgar power of satan. I believe in eternal life through GOD & Jesus Christ! I don’t judge anybody, I have many friends with different beliefs. However, I can never thank GOD enough for delivering me from evil.

Annette: You were a brave young man. Could you share some of the things you did to fight against the dark force that your family lived with?

Bill: We were actually physically assaulted by these vile tormentors. I stood up to them one day in 1979 and did battle with them. This took place after my mother was picked up by an unseen force and thrown accross her bedroom. A Priest was involved for the last 16 months we lived there and he was bringing us mason jars full of Holy Water.  I recall grabbing a Bible and a jar of the Holy Water, going through the house. I commanded the demonic entities to show themselves, in Jesus name. The house started shaking like an earthquake and four evil entities manifested in front of me in green beams of light.

Annette: In your opinion what are the most important things to remember daily in order to cope with an oppressive and aggressive haunted environment?

Bill: The most important thing is to call on GOD, Jesus & The Holy Spirit for deliverence from evil. Make an effort to fill the affected home with love, laughter, unity and uplifting music. Don’t be isolated from people. This is a divide and conquer tactic from the devil.  There’s strength in numbers.

Annette: Sometimes people in bad paranormal situations ask me for some help and then tell me they don’t believe in God, angels, or demons. How would you respond to that?

Bill: I feel very sorry for them, for they do not know the Truth!

Ghost Adventures

Friday nights 9pm EST

by Annette Munnich

Ghost Adventures is a new series on the Travel Channel featuring the team of Zak Bagans, Nick Groff, and equipment technician Aaron Goodwin. This show is written and researched by Jeff Belanger.

I think we have reached the pinnacle here. I’m not sure how paranormal television can get much scarier than this program showing three young men having themselves locked in for the night at famously haunted locations. They enter at dusk and leave at dawn with no camera crew. Simply and dangerously on their own. Zak taunts the ghostly inhabitants for maximum effect.

The show premiered October 17th and there have been two episodes so far. The first was at Bobby Mackey’s in Wilder, Kentucky which has a sign that warns patrons that the place is haunted. Bobby Mackey’s is a country and western bar that was a slaughterhouse at one time. There is a well on the premises that was the scene of satanic worship and sacrifice that is referred to as Hell’s Gate. A young girl  named Pearl was murdered and beheaded and the killers were tracked to the well where her head was deposited. Also on the premises a girl named Johanna committed suicide after her lover was killed. In recent history a maintenance worker named Carl became possessed and required six hours of exorcism. Zak was attacked by malevolent forces on this episode and had long scratches on his back. At the end of the episode he consults with Bishop James Long, ArchBishop at St. Christopher’s Old Catholic Church, who has performed many exorcisms across the country. Bishop James gives his warning that Zak is playing with fire.

The second episode takes the team to Houghton Mansion in North Adams, Massachussetts. The home is haunted by the Houghton family plus their driver. An automobile accident claimed the life of A.C. Houghton’s daughter Mary and the driver shot himself due to remorse. Ten days later A.C. Houghton himself dies. There is also the spirit of a little girl in the basement. To make things creepier the house is now a Masonic Temple that has an electric chair and a bed of nails on the premises. The house is possibly cursed as it has a stone wall on the property that came from a mine where 200 men lost their lives.

I would say this is the edgiest paranormal show on television. I don’t know if anyone could possibly top this or if anyone should attempt to try.

An Interview with Steven LaChance

by Annette Munnich  August 2008

My first contact with Steven LaChance was during the interview I did of Denice Jones. They are very good friends and speak highly of each other always. Steven had some kind words for Denice that were included in the article.

I remembered seeing the episode of the TV show A Haunting that told his story. Recently I had the opportunity to watch that episode again. It’s called “Fear House.” This was the one that had the clown in it, and that made it stick in my mind as I have a clown thing since John Wayne Gacy.I don’t even like the Burger King guy.

Steven gave me a copy of his book to read in advance as it is released to the public  September 1st. The book gives the whole account of the haunting at the Union, Missouri house. I ended up staying up all night to read it in one sitting. The story is gripping and intense. Too much to fit into a one hour show. In fact the TV program was not half as scary as the book is. Steven says about the house that the spirit would prey upon the fears of the observer. In essence it would morph itself into the things his family dreaded most. How awful is that? Steven lived there less than a month with his three children.

One of the most remarkable aspects to this entire story is that it doesn’t end there. The house was a rental and our hero Steve goes back there to help the new tenants.Anyone who has never been in a severe haunting situation will not be able to appreciate how much courage that takes. And this one was severe.

The second family is very much a part of this book. Steven goes back to help them countless times. The new family stays in the house a lot longer and suffers greatly for it. I’d like to say that I am as strong and kind as he is, and that I would do the same as he did, but in all honesty, I doubt that I could.

If you like reading paranormal books, put this one on your list.

Steven does a radio show on Blog Talk Radio Tuesday nights and begins filming the Haunted Survivors TV show in September. It is a Booth Brothers production as was Children of the Grave, a horror documentary Steven was a part of. The Zombie Road part really gave a chill.   He is also in the new Booth Brothers documentary THE POSSESSED which is the story of the Watseka, Illinois house where the first documented case of possession occured in the United States. I actually just moved to Watseka, so look for a lot more about John Whitman, his house and the upcoming film about it all.

There will be a HAUNTED SURVIVORS TOUR, and a book tour, so check out Steven’s website as he may be coming to your neck of the woods :)

The Interview

Annette: Was it difficult for you to recount your horrifying experiences while writing THE UNINVITED?

Steven: At times it was like reliving it all over again.  However, I felt that it was important for me to tap back into those feelings to bring them to the book. So many times in interviews I had been asked, “How did you feel at this moment or that moment?”  by tapping into those feelings I was able to demonstrate those emotions with a clearer picture.  That was important to me and I felt that it would be important to the reader. The hardest parts were the parts that dealt with my chldren and the personal losses that I revealed in the book which I felt were important to understand in order to truly understand my part of this haunting.

Annette: How has this experience changed your life?

Steven: Wow, the whole book, The Uninvited is how it changed my life.  At the point when this started I was a very angry and bitter man.  That has changed.  I have learned to release a lot of that bitterness and anger which I feel helped get me into spiritual trouble in the first place. My faith is strong and sound.  Not that I am a paticularly religous man, but I have learned to have faith is to love unconditionally.  Faith and religion are two very different things.  There are those who are very religous out there that have not learned the first thing about “true” faith.  I have also learned that it is important to live your life with the most positive of attitudes.  Faith, Love, and a Postive Attitude that is what truly fuels a good life.

Annette: How many years has it been since you were there at the house?

Steven: There are times when it seems like yestrerday.  The last time I stepped into the house was to remove Linda (Helen in the book) and that was in October of 2005.

Annette:
I am also wondering how your children have coped with the ordeal they went through.

Steven: They are all three doing great today.  They dealt with it each in their own way.

My daughter at first had to talk about it. She found her solace in her religion and her faith.  Today she is married and in Januay will become a mother for the first time.  Yes, that will make me a grandpa.

My middle son, does not discuss it at all publicly.  He barely discusses it with me.  He is that way.  Every once in awhile he will ask me something, but for the most part he has put it behind him.  This is his first year of college.  He is a English Major and a Film Student.

My youngest son.  He will talk about it more than the other three to a point.  There are certain aspects that he will not discuss publicly.  We are getting him through that.  He has been home schooled and will begin college in January for Criminal Justice.  He wants a career in Law Enforcement and eventually wants to be a DEA agent.

Overall, I think they have adjusted well and they have gown into young adults that any parent would be proud of.

Annette: What is your opinion on the episode of A HAUNTING that told your story. I know an awful lot was left out.

Steven: They did leave an awful lot of the story out.  It was the readers digest condensed version.  I can’t blame them though, they had a very limited time.  Some of it was way over the top and then some of it was downplayed quite a bit.  However, it did drive me to write the book to tell the whole story.

Annette:
Since then you have been busy working in the Paranormal, please tell me a bit about the new show HAUNTED SURVIVORS and your other works with the Booth Brothers.

Steven: Haunted Survivors is still in development and will start filming in September.  What can I say about the Booth Brothers?  Who wouldn’t want to work with them?  They are awesome.  Also, the Union House story has a very small part in the upcoming Booth Brothers production The Possessed due out in October.  I am also working on some other projects with them as well that I am not at liberty to discuss at this time.

Annette:
When will HAUNTED SURVIVORS go on the air?

Steven: That remains to be seen.  I do know that you will be seeing myselfl, Tim Yancey, and Bill Bean as part of that line up.

Annette:
You are also doing a HAUNTED SURVIVORS tour and radio show?

Steven: We ae hoping the tour will hit in January of 2009.  Haunted Survivor Radio is every Tuesday night on Blog Talk Radio at 7pm Central.

Annette: What do you believe happens when we die?

Steven: Let’s just say that I believe in an afterlife.  Other than that, it would get way too complicated to go into here.  Well, I have this idea of self-inflicted purgatory.  That hell may actually be a state of mind brought on by ourselves after we pass. Sort of follows the lines of Jean Paul Sarte.  lol   Anyone that is really curious about this can always look me up.

Annette: What are the best things a person can do if they find themselves in an extreme haunted situation?

Steven:
First off, I have decided that I don’t like the term extreme.  It really does not paint the right picture of what these type of hauntings are all about.  I think I prefer the term violent hauntings.

The best advice that I could give someone is to find someone that has lived through it.  There is a sub-culture of us in the paranormal community who have lived through these type things and we are committed to helping others. We have gained the right type of resources to help these cases and we also have the practical knowledge.  We are their best bet.

Annette: Thanks so much Steven for making the time to chat with me. I appreciate it and wish you success with your new book and TV Show.
